Africa has begun a socio-economic renaissance which had seen it become the fastest growing region in the world prior to the economic disruption brought about by the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic. Underpinning this is accelerated industrialization which is getting a huge further boost from the commencement of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, AfCFTA. However Africa has been plagued by inadequate energy generation and inefficient power distribution, this despite the continent being well endowed with various forms of feedstock for power generation, such as oil, gas , hydro and renewables. This has seriously inhibited Africa’s industrialization capacity.

Even the continent’s two largest economies, Nigeria and South Africa suffer from this problem.

Liberalization of various aspects of the power supply chain has opened the door to private sector participation and improved both efficiency and capacity, but the full potentials are still far from being reached.

Our award scheme seeks to identify the best performers and best practices across the continent as a way of drawing attention to the capacities of the enterprises and institutions which accomplish the most for the benefit of the economic jurisdictions where they operate. This would both win them the support of various stakeholders to further improve their performance, and provide role models for the rest of Africa’s power industry to strive to emulate.

Ultimately therefore the awards aim to improve the capacities and performance of Africa’s power industry and encourage best practice in the industry around the continent.
